Questions in the margins
Sometimes I agree with a paragraph and still write a question mark beside it. Not because I think the author is wrong, but because I want to remember that agreement is not the same as understanding.
A question mark can mean say more. It can mean prove it. It can mean how would this look in my own life? I like that one symbol can hold more than one job.
If I treat reading like a conversation, I stay gentler with myself when I do not finish a book quickly. The book is not a race. It is a long walk where you are allowed to stop at benches.
Lately I am trying to move a few margin questions into full sentences in this section. That is harder than it sounds. A margin question can be blurry and still useful. An essay wants a little more spine.
What helps is writing the first draft like a letter to a friend, then switching to a quieter voice when I edit. The friend draft keeps me honest. The quiet draft keeps me kind.
